Bus Dismissal, Schedule Changes, ECT.
I am absolutely appaulled by the idea of my 5th grade science class missing science for an entire week, because of a few classes and teachers can not get their classrooms quiet. And, that can not happen because these same children have been given new teachers and new schedules. The eighth graders had 2 science teachers, then 3 science teachers, then a new third science teacher. There is no consistency in constant change. I think that if this school, staff, and students are going to make it, then there has to be some CONSISTENCY, somewhere. Everytime that something isn't working, then it changes, dramatically. How can our students ever achieve academic achievement, justice, integrity, or fun if every week since the beginning of school, there has been a change of some kind in the schedule.

First of all I do not believe that a change of teacher has anything to do with how students who have been in a school since kindergarten walk down steps. If there is a problem, then it SHOULD be dramatically changed. Our school does not need to be "tweaked", it needs to be fixed. Secondly, practicing dismissal affects everyone equally in some fashion or another, so no single person is any more inconvenienced than another. If we do not get complete control of our students throughout the building, then there will be no learning happening anywhere, regardless of the teaching. Thirdly, our school HAS had consistency. We have operated with the same set of rules and expectations for all of our classes since the first day of school. If these rules and expectations are not enforced by everyone in the building, they are useless.
Well, I disagree. The fact that YOU have not had to deal with countless substitutes with the 8th grade students and the 5th grade students. If YOU think that YOU can get THESE kids under control, then go right ahead! Because, the 8th graders ARE still out of control, especially the certain few that disrupt continually throughout the day. And you can't honestly say that different teachers don't effect how students function in a classroom? If you really don't understand then come upstairs and stay awhile. It is my opinion that until we have a solid schedule, curriculum, and staff then these students are going to keep going at this same rate. CRAZY!!!!!!!
I don't believe that my entry was targeted at any teacher in particular, or any grade level. I am merely pointing out that unless all teachers are striving for the same expectations from all students, then the students will never reach those expectations. I have taught at a variety of schools, and I assure you that THESE students are not worse than any other students. In fact, they are much more managable than others I've worked with.
I would also like to point out that PE teachers are equally affected by behavior issues. Although we only have each class once or twice a week, we have every single classroom within the school. Further, the fact that we are given less time with them also lessens our time to build relationships with the students. Yet we strive to always hold the students to the highest expectations of behavior. I am confident that, if we unite as a staff, we can see those goals accomplished. I know our students are capable of great things.
