What can we do to improve all group gatherings?

This morning's gathering had its ups and downs. What can we do to make it more functional and less of a crowd control issue? The all school gathering is not only a way to share information but it can help tailor the ESM school "family" climate.

I agree. It was not easy being "up there" in front of a class of 600+. I want to persevere on this because I think it will help us create a positive school climate. Ms. Fleming has a few great ideas for organizing gatherings. We will talk about them on Tuesday. I do not want to give up my expectations for the school. It is going to take a while, but I am certain we can get there. It would be very helpful if everyone had the same expectations and practiced these daily in the classroom.

maybe do more frequent medium sized gatherings? such as K-1, 2-4, 5-6, 7-8 to establish the methods and procedures before meshing all the grades together.

i also honestly think the ROOM itself had a lot of impact on the focus. (close quarters, hard to hear, etc.)

maybe the new building will afford more room and maybe a microphone?

I really support the all school assembly. I found frustration in trying to keep them quiet, but I do believe the acoustics were a hinderence. And, it seemed the students aren't familiar with the expectations. They will get it. Everything takes practice.

I do have a recommendation. Seating assignments-so to speak. Boy girl boy girl is popular, but get your kids into rows and not next to their buddies could help. Maybe alphbetical or with their mentors?

And, to start promptly at a certain time, it might be better to leave classrooms early.

I also agree with the smaller gatherings as well. It seems we are taking a lot of time to sit and talk in gatherings with our students, but with each gathering they get better at it and everyone gets info they might have been wondering about. Middle school pods, grade levels and subject matter gatherings would probably all be beneficial to the community in our school.

And, let's face it, sometimes a nice gathering for 30 minutes is better than fighting for volume control in the open classroom setting.

Sorry so long!!!

I believe the gathering went very well since it was the first. I think that smaller gathering would be nice, however, I believe that the whole school gathering is a way to applaud accomplishments from other "family members" that we may not see on a regular basis. Also, reinforce the wholistic approach to education... I see a value in both types of gatherings.

I believe it would be helpful to review expectations of a gathering prior to going downstairs. Once downstairs, all staff supervise to reinforce the expectations that have been identified. I believe nwe just need to practice. We learn from doing and make adjustments that are required...this process too will get better.
